The car is in amazing condition for it's age the only problem is it shakes once you reach 45mph if you tap the brakes it will stop until you let the brake go. Don't have a lot of money need to know what to replace. PLEASE HELP! Also have the wheel bearings checked. They're the most likely to stop the wheels from shaking when the brakes are applied because they help dampen the vibration. '03 Boxster S Evap leak & vibration noise? I have an '03 Boxster S, with about 18,500 miles on it. I have two issues I was hoping you could help me with. Issue #1, the less mysterious of the 2: Check engine light has come on 3 times since I've had the car on the road since roughly early March. Each time it's the same error, for either a "large" or "significant" evap leak. Through testing, we've been able to rule out the gas cap, and the sensors check out OK, so they're functioning properly. Any ideas? I've been told an evap leak isn't more than pollution control measures, so it's not going to harm the car. But, your stomach does drop when the dreaded orange light pops on. Issue #2- vibration sound, related to RPM. The sounds is difficult to describe, it's a raspy metallic noise, sounds like a high pitched, loose tailpipe. Here's what I've been able to determine: -Only happens when the engine is up to temp, not when it's cold. -only occurs in the RPM range of 2800-3200 -the noise is not present below 2800, and goes away after 3200 RPM -happens whether the car is in neutral, or traveling (noise is exactly the same) -it doesn't sound like an internal engine sound, my limited mechanical know-how makes me think the speed/pitch/torque of the engine at those RPMs is making something else rattle. So there you have it... The car isn't leaking anything, nothing burning, no strange smells, behaves just as it should. Just had it's routine maintenence about a month ago, and nothing out of the ordinary popped up then. Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it. car insurance. Daihatsu . How to Troubleshoot a Subaru LegacyIf your Subaru Legacy is experiencing technical difficulties, then it is important to first figure out what is wrong with it rather than throwing time, money and parts at the car hoping that the problem will get fixed. Knowing some of the basic automobile troubleshooting methods, such as using OBD II scanners and listening to different sounds that your car is making will help to prevent bad problems from becoming worse. If you find that you are getting in over your head, as always, take the car to a professional mechanic. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need OBD II scanner Computer with Internet access 50/50 antifreeze Distilled water Step by Step : 1 Use an OBD II scanner to read any troubleshooting codes that are being sent from the Legacy's ECM (engine control module). OBD II codes are used to read faults reported by sensors and electronics in the engine and other important systems. The OBD II terminal is a 16-pin connector that is located near the base of the steering column behind a small panel. Plug in the OBD II scanner and turn the ignition key to the accessories position. Look up the fault codes from the scanner on websites such as AutoZone or in commercial repair manuals. 2 Use a computer with Internet access to look up recalls and TSBs (technical service bulletins) released on your specific mdoel year of the Legacy. Websites for recalls and TSBs include AutoZone, LemonAuto and Automotive. Examples of recalls include the side air-bag systems in the 2005 Legacy and the steering columns in the 2010 model. 3 Listen to your Subaru Legacy as you are cranking the engine, or while driving. If you notice that your car makes a metallic grinding sound or a slight whirling followed by a "click" when you turn the ignition key, then the starter motor is bad. If you notice metallic pinging coming from the wheels when turning or accelerating, then your CV joints are failing. If you hear loud knocking noises or metallic bearings pinging together when the air conditioner is turned on, then your compressor is failing and you are either low on refrigerant or you have a leak in your car's air conditioning system. 4 Look underneath your Legacy for any fluid leaks. If you notice large pools of coolant, which looks like an oily, rainbow-colored fluid, then you may have a water pump that is going bad. If you notice red fluid, then your transmission or brake fluid is leaking. If you notice carbon building up on your engine's components or a black, oily substance beneath the vehicle, then you have an oil leak. Continue to add fluids until gaskets and seals are replaced. Daihatsu . 1992 Chevy Silverado 4X4 TroubleshootingThe 1992 Chevy Silverado 4x4 is a pickup truck that allows users to haul or tow heavy trailers or loads. If you are having problems with your 1992 Chevy Silverado, you will need an OBD (on-board diagnostic) machine to check the engine. Gaining access to an OBD machine will require you to rent one from a body shop or auto repair center. After you get the troubleshooting code from the OBD scan tool, you will be able to fix your Silverado. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need OBD scan tool Reference manual Step by Step : 1 Look in the footwell of the driver's side of the truck for the 16-pin plug. This runs off of the main wiring harness on the left of the fuse panel. 2 Plug the OBD cord into the plug. Turn on the OBD machine and then turn on the ignition in the truck so that the electrical panel comes on. 3 Press the "Start" button on your scan tool and then wait for the machine to send you a troubleshooting code. 4 Unplug the OBD pin from the truck and then turn the truck off. 5 Compare the code against the code explanation in your ODB reference manual to find out the problem with the engine. The reference manual comes with the machine rental. It allows you to look up the troubleshooting code for the specific reason your truck is not working properly. In two-wheel drive, only the driveshaft connected to the rear wheels gets power from the engine, and the front wheels are disengaged. In four-wheel drive, the engine powers all the wheels. Four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles are different from all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles in that AWD vehicles send power to all four wheels all the time. AWD vehicles usually employ a center differential to split power from the engine to the front and rear wheels. Well, you've survived the ride on the drive train. * on to learn macram6 or fly-tying, take the time to educate yourself about an automotive system that most people take for granted, even though it may be the only system in your car that can kill you if you don't keep it in good repair. As you've probably guessed — especially if you read chapter titles — I'm talking about your brakes. Brake System Basics One reason that today's vehicles are the safest in history is that they're equipped with hydraulic brake systems designed to operate on very simple principles with a minimum of parts and maintenance. Since 1968, all vehicles are also equipped with dual brake systems to ensure that if one set of brakes fails, the other set will still be able to stop your car; and with a dashboard light to warn you if your front or rear brakes fail. Figure 10-1 shows a basic brake system with a power booster, disc brakes on the front wheels, and drum brakes on the rear wheels. Your vehicle may not have power brakes or may have disc or drum brakes all around, but the principle is the same in any case. The following sections take a look at each of the components of a brake system, starting with the first point of contact between you and your brakes and working down the line to the brakes themselves. 180 Part II: What Makes It Go?.
